Why Support Arts Gowanus?

Q: Greenwich Village, SoHo, TriBeca, Williamsburg: What do these NYC neighborhoods have in common?
A: They hosted vibrant artist communities in our lifetimes —and lost them to crippling real estate prices.

We are working to make sure Gowanus is not next. It’s imperative that we’re able to continue our advocacy for artists in this neighborhood; our commitment to keeping Gowanus an enclave for a diverse and equitable arts community will not only benefit artists here, but will ultimately serve as a model for a sustainable future for artists city-wide.

For 26 years we have been nurturing relationships among individual artists, arts organizations, local businesses, and the community. We have over 400 member artists who work in or call Gowanus home. These artists come from all walks of life and represent the multiethnic diversity of New York City.

The goal of our work is to strengthen our community fabric and connect diverse groups through the arts. We believe that art and artists are essential co-creators of neighborhood identity, drivers of civic engagement and economic development, catalysts for change and conversation, and active participants in public dialogues.

We believe that art and artists are essential co-creators of neighborhood identity, drivers of civic engagement and economic development, catalysts for change and conversation, and active participants in public dialogues. We produce open studio events, professional development workshops, public art works, artistic collaborations and exhibitions, and we’re deeply involved in policy planning underway in our neighborhood.

We are at a pivotal point in our journey.

Over the next few years we need to dramatically grow our infrastructure before we take stewardship of 30,000 square feet of affordable studio space and a community center that we have negotiated as part of the Gowanus Rezoning plan.

We have a year-round schedule of art exhibitions, art fairs, public art events, installations and curations we are consistently creating ways to showcase the robust talent we have in our unique neighborhood. Our largest event, the hugely popular Gowanus Open Studios event has become an annual fixture for anyone interested in contemporary art and great opportunity for people to discover what is so special about the creative community in Gowanus.

We welcome your support at whatever level is comfortable for you. We are also excited to be able to offer the following benefits to those who are able to go above and beyond
